Frequently Asked Questions About Marriage & Civil Partnerships

In the Netherlands, a registered partnership is almost the same as a marriage. The rights and obligations between spouses and between partners are the same, as are the conditions, requirements, and documents you must submit. We will therefore refer to both as “marriage/partnership” hereafter. You indicate your choice on the registration form.

There are three differences between marriage and civil partnership:

• A civil partnership is registered by signing a document. In a marriage, you say “I do.”
• Registered partnerships are not always recognized abroad. This can cause problems when working or living in some other countries.
• To dissolve a marriage, you must go to court. A registered partnership can be dissolved through a lawyer or notary, provided there are no minor children.

The wedding officiant will contact you by phone between two and six weeks before the wedding date to schedule a time and place for a personal meeting. You no longer automatically marry under the community property regime, but under the limited community property regime. This also applies to registered partnerships.

Music may be played during a standard ceremony. Each wedding venue in the municipality of Moerdijk is equipped with one JBL speaker. This allows music to be played via a cell phone. It is not possible to play music through the JBL speaker using a USB drive. Make sure the songs are in the right order on your phone! During the introductory meeting with the couple, the wedding officiant will ask them to designate one of the guests to operate the speaker during the ceremony.

How Does the Speaker Work?

Turn on the speaker. Connect the phone that has the music on it to the JBL speaker via Bluetooth. On the phone, select "JBL Charge 4." The sound from the phone will now come through the speaker.

No, that's not allowed. This also applies to confetti. But with a little imagination, there are plenty of alternatives. Be sure to check with the venue in advance.

Everything is open to discussion when it comes to your wedding ceremony. However, the official part can only be performed by the wedding officiant, as he or she is bound by legal requirements and it is his or her responsibility.

Unfortunately, due to the environmental impact, balloons may not be released in our municipality. 

Of course, guests from your party are welcome to take photos and videos. Be sure to discuss this with your wedding officiant beforehand.

There will be someone at the entrance ready to show you to the right place. All you have to do is be there on time.

The Mauritshuis in Willemstad

There are plenty of parking spaces on the premises. The wedding car may be parked in front of the entrance.

The City Hall in Klundert

There are plenty of parking spaces around City Hall. The wedding car may be parked in front of the entrance. The “Amsterdammertjes” (bollards designed to prevent unauthorized parking) will be lowered for this purpose.

The Town Hall in Zevenbergen

There are plenty of parking spaces on the town hall grounds. The wedding car may be parked in front of the entrance.

Pets are not allowed in the municipality’s wedding venues. The only exception is an assistance or service dog that is on duty at the time.
