Would you like to install an advertising sign? For advertising signs on a building that are larger than 0.5 m², you need an environmental permit. Walls on which advertisements are displayed are considered advertising signs. This also applies to drawings and inscriptions used to announce political, cultural, or sporting events, among other things.

Requests

The following applies when applying for an environmental permit:

  1. You can use the permit check tool on the Omgevingsloket website to see if you need an environmental permit;
  2. If you need a permit, you can also apply for it digitally through the same module. You will need your DigiD login credentials to do so (for businesses, this is now only possible via “eHerkenning”; please visit the website of the Ministry of Economic Affairs for more information;
  3. You will receive a written response from the competent authority. This may be the municipality, but it could also be the province, the water board, or the national government;
  4. In most cases, consultation with the competent authority is required: an environmental permit requires a customized approach;
  5. If your application is approved, the permit will be sent to you (along with the conditions under which the permit is granted);
  6. If you disagree with the decision, you may file an appeal. The decision explains how to do so.

Procedure

The preparatory procedure may be either standard or extended (depending on the complexity of the application, such as when the installation of advertising is part of multiple construction or renovation activities). The standard preparatory procedure has a processing time of 8 weeks (from confirmation of the application to the announcement of the decision) and may be extended by 6 weeks. The extended preparatory procedure has a processing time of 6 months, with a possible extension of 6 weeks. The competent authority will indicate in advance which of the two types of procedures will apply.

Depending on your request, 1 or more drawings (of both the current and desired situations) with information on:

All facade elevations;

  • Key details related to the appearance of the structure;
  • Structural calculations;
  • Situation Overview.

  • Size of banner
  • Preferred location
  • Text and image
  • How the banner is attached to the frame
  • Period for which the exemption is to apply
