Sometimes the cause of a clog isn't clear. In that case, it's important to know: is the clog on your property, or on the city's side? You'll be able to tell once the drain is dug up.

The manhole cover is a section of sewer pipe with a cover that can be opened. The manhole cover is usually located on your property, near the boundary with municipal land, about 60 to 80 cm below ground. If you open this manhole cover, you can look into the sewer system. This is clearly explainedin the video.

• Is there water in the drain trap? If so, the clog is located past the drain trap, so it’s likely the city’s responsibility. In that case, call the city.
• Is the drain connection dry? If so, the problem is located before the drain connection—that is, on your property. In that case, you’ll have to fix it yourself or have it fixed.

Where is the sewer system located?

If the sewer system was installed or renovated in the past 10 to 20 years, there is almost always a manhole. You can call the municipality for information on its location.

No drain trap—what now?

Sometimes there is no sewer access point. Or the sewer access point may be too far from the property line, for example, near the front door. In that case, you can dig up the sewer pipe at the property line and install a sewer access point yourself. A good location for a sewer access point is half a meter inside your property from the property line. You can find videos on YouTube showing how to install a sewer access point yourself. Only do this if you know what you’re doing; otherwise, you could make the sewer problems worse.
