Use of Names

If you are married or in a registered partnership, you can choose which last name you want to use. You can also specify how you want the municipality to address you.

Which last name can I choose from?

• Your own last name;
• Your own last name followed by your partner's;
• Your partner's last name followed by your own last name;
• Your partner's last name.

You can always change your choice later.

To be clear: official documents, such as your travel document and/or driver’s license, will always list only your maiden name. However, when applying for a travel document and/or driver’s license, you can request that your spouse’s name also be included. An additional line will then be added below your birth surname with “e.v.” (spouse of) or “p.v.” (partner of), followed by the last name of your spouse or partner.
