Ukrainians – Education
In the Netherlands, children ages 4 to 12 attend elementary school.
Almost every residential area within the municipality of Moerdijk has one or more elementary schools. This allows children to attend a school near their home. Children who do not yet speak Dutch first attend De Toren Elementary School in Zevenbergen. This school specializes in educating children who are still learning Dutch. Once a child understands enough Dutch to join a regular classroom, they can be enrolled in the elementary school of their choice.
Your child may start elementary school at age 4. You may not enroll your child in elementary school before the age of 3.

In general, parents are responsible for their children’s transportation to and from school. In exceptional cases, a child may be eligible for school transportation. For more information,visit the school transportation page.
Secondary Education
Children aged 12 and older who do not yet speak Dutch attend an ISK (International Transition Class).
From the municipality of Moerdijk, the nearest ISKs are in Breda and in Bergen op Zoom/Roosendaal. Due to high demand for this type of education, your child may be temporarily placed on a waiting list.

When a child transfers from an ISK to a regular secondary school or a vocational education program (MBO), the ISK handles the enrollment process.
Waiver of MBO Tuition Fees
In recent years, Ukrainian displaced persons have been able to have their tuition fees for a vocational education program waived. You must apply for this waiver before making the payment. If you’ve already paid the tuition, you can’t get a refund. On the DUO website, you’ll find the eligibility requirements and the application form for tuition fee waiver. It is not known how long this program will remain in effect.
Student Financial Aid
At this time, it is not possible for Ukrainian displaced persons to apply for student financial aid from DUO. For higher professional education (HBO) and universities, the institutional tuition rate must be paid. This is the amount that students from outside the European Union must pay, and it is very high. This may change in the future to the statutory tuition rate, which is a lower rate and applies to students from the EU. It is not yet known when this will change.
Degree Evaluation
To work in certain sectors, you’ll need to have your Ukrainian diploma evaluated. A diploma evaluation compares your diploma to the Dutch educational system. This is required in sectors such as healthcare, but also in other sectors. Without a diploma evaluation, you often won’t be able to work in these fields. Please note: some sectors may have additional requirements beyond the diploma evaluation, such as completing supplementary training programs.
