Electric Vehicles and Charging Stations
In the coming years, Vattenfall InCharge will be expanding its network of public charging stations. At the public charging stations operated by our partner Vattenfall InCharge, you’ll always charge your vehicle using 100% electricity generated by Dutch wind turbines.
There may not be a charging station near you yet. You can submit a proposal for a new location through the Vattenfall website. Every six months, the municipality works with Vattenfall to review the best-performing charging stations and proposals from residents. This analysis determines where new charging stations will be installed in the following six months. The charging station itself is free; you only pay for charging your electric car.
It is no longer possible to submit an application. You can now only submit a proposal through the Vattenfall website.
Apply for a charging card
To use the charging stations, you’ll need a charging card. At Vattenfall’s public charging stations, the most cost-effective way to charge is with the Vattenfall InCharge charging card. You’ll only pay the kWh rate and no additional fees. This charging card is free and works at all public charging stations in the Netherlands.
Charging Stations Nearby
There are all kinds of apps that help you find a nearby charging station. Our partner, Vattenfall InCharge, offers the free InCharge app for smartphones. The app shows you all public charging stations. You can also see if a charging station is available and navigate directly to it using the built-in navigation feature. You can also use this app to start your charging session and pay easily.

A lot of thought is being put into the location
The location of a charging station is chosen with great care. Trees must be able to continue growing properly, the charging station must be easy to find, and, of course, there must be a power cable nearby. We also try to ensure that a charging station is not placed directly in front of a door or window.
Charging stations are also being installed in busy neighborhoods
Parking is very limited in almost all neighborhoods in the municipality. That is why we are trying to space out the charging stations. This allows us to enable as many people as possible to charge their vehicles with as few charging stations as possible. As a result, a charging station may not be intended for immediate neighbors but for multiple people in a neighborhood. Since charging is also necessary in busy neighborhoods, charging stations will be installed there as well.
The municipality is installing signs near charging stations
The municipality provides traffic signs at charging stations. A traffic ordinance has been enacted for this purpose. One parking space next to a charging station is reserved and marked with a sign. Once a sign is in place, parking is permitted only in that space for the purpose of charging a vehicle. Is the battery fully charged? Then the vehicle must be moved to a regular parking space. Is there no sign next to a charging station? Then anyone may park there, including drivers of gasoline-powered vehicles. If usage of a charging station is very high, the second parking space may also be reserved. In this traffic ordinance, two parking spaces have been reserved from the outset.
Charging Stations in the Fortress of Willemstad
There are currently a few charging stations within the Willemstad fortress. These are not enough to charge all the cars. Therefore, additional charging stations are needed. However, there is very little space available for them, and they do not fit in with the historic streetscape. For this reason, a charging plaza is being built outside the fortress. Both residents and visitors will be able to use it.
Cable trays and other equipment are not permitted
Sometimes people want to charge their cars using their own electricity but don’t have space on their property. We regularly receive questions about using cable troughs or other aids. The use of such aids is not permitted. We know that pilot programs are being conducted in various municipalities. We are following these with great interest. Until the results are clear, residents can submit a request for a public charging station.
You can help shape new rules
Reaching agreements and drafting rules takes time. At the same time, developments in the field of electric vehicles and charging are moving at lightning speed. That’s why we’re constantly working to improve the rules. There’s a good chance they’ll change in the coming years. To prevent public spaces from becoming cluttered, we’re doing this in stages. When the rules change, we’ll announce it. Do you have any ideas of your own? Share them with us! All ideas will be collected and taken into account when the rules are updated. Ownership and Management
Charging stations are not owned by the municipality but are installed and managed by a company. Examples include Allego or Vattenfall. You can compare this to a brand-name gas station. Each company has its own systems and rates. You can charge your vehicle at any of these companies’ charging stations.
Starting in January 2025, Vattenfall will be responsible for this. They have a contract with the municipality. This contract outlines the procedures for installing a charging station and the criteria for eligibility. Therefore, all new charging stations installed from now on will be provided by Vattenfall.
Please contact the owner. The service number is posted on the charging station and is available 24 hours a day. You cannot report malfunctions or damage to the municipality. You can visit the owners' websites for more information: Allego, Park&Charge, Vattenfall.
New charging stations
A charging station is installed following a request from a resident or in locations where there is a high demand for charging stations, such as shopping centers, sports complexes, or recreational areas. It is no longer possible to submit a request yourself. You can now only suggest a location for a new charging station through the Vattenfall website.
In the coming years, Vattenfall will establish a comprehensive network so that every resident has access to a charging station within 300 meters. If you believe that the capacity in your neighborhood is insufficient, you can report this viathe Vattenfall websiteExternal.
Yes, for new residential developments, we estimate how many charging spots will be needed so that charging stations are already in place when the development is completed. However, we can never fully predict demand, and we do not rule out the possibility of adding additional spots in the future.
Place and Location
Vattenfall is working on a network of charging stations that is large enough to meet current and future needs. More and more people are switching to electric vehicles. That’s why charging stations are sometimes already being installed in areas where demand is still low. In this way, Vattenfall and the municipality of Moerdijk are ensuring that you can always charge your car.
Installing a charging station in a public space does not require a permit. You cannot file an objection to this.
However, a traffic order is required to reserve parking spaces for electric cars. Once this order is published, you can file an objection to it. More information can be found on the “Objections and Appeals” webpage.
When selecting a location, various factors are taken into account. Examples include:
- The location should be as close as possible to the power lines.
- Ideally, there should be no cables running under the roadway.
- The location should be easy to find (preferably not a dead-end street).
- There must be enough space for the charging station.
- There must be enough space for a mobility scooter or stroller, for example, to pass by.
- Ideally, the location should not be directly in front of windows and doors of homes.
- Trees must be able to continue growing.
It is not always possible to find the ideal location. In that case, the most suitable location will be chosen.
Parking
Anyone can charge their vehicle at public charging stations, including people who haven't applied to use them. It is not possible to reserve a spot.
In the municipality of Moerdijk, the traffic sign next to a charging station determines who is allowed to park there. The municipality designates one parking space with a sign next to each charging station. You may only park in that space to charge your electric car. Once the battery is full, you must move the car to a regular parking space. At charging stations without a traffic sign, the parking space is a regular parking spot. Gas-powered cars are also allowed to park there. This is also stated in recent information about charging stations in Moerdijk. Our municipal enforcement officers are authorized to check for illegal parking in designated charging spaces.
Once your car is charged, you should move it to a regular parking space. Many electric cars are linked to an app that sends a notification as soon as the battery is full. This allows the next user to start charging right away. In some neighborhoods, electric car drivers also use messaging groups to let each other know when the charging station is available.
Leaving a car parked at a charging station when the battery is already full is called "charging station hogging." This is disruptive to others and is not permitted. Our municipal enforcement officers may check for this.
Spaces are reserved based on the usage of the charging station. The busier the charging station, the more spaces are reserved. A space is reserved for charging only when there is a sign indicating so. If there is no sign, any car may park there, including gasoline-powered cars.
An electric car often replaces a gasoline-powered car. As a result, parking pressure will hardly increase. However, there will be a shift in where residents park their cars.
A parking space is reserved for electric cars only if there is a sign indicating so. In that case, the rule can be enforced, and you risk getting a fine. If there is no such sign, anyone may park there, even if there is a charging station. 
Private property
No, you do not need a permit to install a charging station on your own property. However, if you rent a home, you must ask your landlord for permission.
This is permitted only if you can park your car directly at your home on your own property. If your car is parked in a public parking lot, this is not permitted. It is also not permitted to use aids such as cable channels, mats, or arms extending onto the sidewalk.
You may do so only if you are parking on your own property. In all other cases, parking in front of a driveway is prohibited. This is also not permitted in front of your own driveway.
