Registering a stillborn baby

Parents who wish to do so may register their stillborn child in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP). You can arrange the registration at the city hall of the municipality where you are registered. The birth may have taken place in a different municipality.

Do you meet the requirements? If so, please bring the following items to city hall:

• The completed form “Request to Add a Stillborn Child to the Personal Records List”
• Your passport or ID card

No deed?

If no birth certificate was ever issued for a stillborn child, what should be done? Parents can still request that the civil registry office of the municipality where the child was born issue a stillbirth certificate. The registrar of the municipality where the birth or death occurred will issue the certificate after verifying that a stillborn child was indeed born. This verification is based on supporting documents.

Please note! It is therefore possible that the birth must be registered in a different municipality.

Good to Know

• At the time of the child's birth, the parent must be registered in the civil registry.
• A valid source document must be submitted. Depending on the date of birth, this may be a birth certificate and death certificate or a certificate of stillbirth (birth certificate (stillbirth)).
• The request must be submitted in writing to the parent's municipality of residence.
• Each parent must personally submit a request to have the child’s information included on his or her personal list.
