Migrant Workers

Many sectors are increasingly dependent on migrant workers, particularly the construction industry, the agricultural sector, engineering and manufacturing, and transportation and logistics. Approximately 1,200 migrant workers live in the municipality of Moerdijk. Some 4,600 migrant workers are employed there, primarily from Poland and Romania. With the arrival of Moerdijk Logistics Park, that number is expected to increase by another 1,000 in the coming years. Currently, there are 14,000 job openings in the West Brabant region, a large portion of which will be filled by migrant workers. All of this has a major impact on housing, employment, and community life. The Moerdijk City Council has therefore developed policies to address this, in the form of an Integrated Approach to Labor Migration (2020), an Environmental Suitability Assessment Framework (2021), and a Rental Ordinance for Housing for Labor Migrants (2024).

Migrant workers who stay to work and live here for an extended period or permanently bring significant added value to businesses and local communities. The municipality wants to provide high-quality housing because we want to try to retain migrant workers in our community. Good housing is very important in this regard.

For migrant workers who stay here longer, the municipality of Moerdijk becomes the place where they live and work. That is why the municipality wants to invest in integration and participation, enabling international workers to fully participate in Moerdijk society. It is very important to have a central location where they can go with all their questions during office hours. Clear explanations of rights and obligations and proper registration to keep track of numbers are essential. Due to an aging population and a declining birth rate, migrant workers are our new residents. Thanks to them, we can keep local services in our communities alive.
