On this page, we answer the most frequently asked questions regarding asylum reception.
On May 11, 2023, at 8:30 p.m., the municipal executive discussed the shelter location with the city council. The municipal executive asked the city council for its opinion on the plans for a shelter location on Schansdijk and what concerns the council had. It was a public meeting that could also be followed online and can be viewed onthe Administrative Information website. On June 29, the topic was on the agenda of the City Council committee. This was also a public meeting that could be followed online and can be viewed onthe “Committee Meeting Thursday, June 29, 2023” page on the Administrative Information website(agenda item 7.2.1a). On July 13, during a public meeting, the city council decided to proceed with the shelter. On September 19, 2024, the environmental permit for the construction of the shelter was granted.
The permit has been granted for a maximum of 10 years.
The asylum seeker centers in the Netherlands are overcrowded. The national government is asking all municipalities to help find a solution to this problem. As a municipality, we want to take responsibility and make a fair contribution to providing decent shelter for asylum seekers in our country, but on our own terms. We believe it is important to determine as much as possible ourselves what happens in our municipality regarding asylum shelter. To maintain control, we have therefore offered this facility to the COA.
